Public Safety & Gang Prevention

o        In 2007, Rep. Bordsen was appointed Co-Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Justice and Public Safety.  The committee is charged with appropriating $2 billion of the state budget.  Striking a balance between public safety and fiscal responsibility has been the focus of the committee this session.

o        Rep. Bordsen advocated for funding for the Piedmont Triad Regional Crime Lab.  Locating a lab in the Piedmont area allows evidence to be processed locally, instead of in Raleigh.  Faster processing of evidence is helpful to law enforcement and the courts.

o        Through her work on the Justice and Public Safety Appropriations Subcommittee, Rep. Bordsen has committed herself to increasing funding to the under-funded court system in North Carolina.  She also supported expanding access to courts by increasing fees to improve court-utilized technology.

o        Rep. Bordsen also sponsored a bill for increased funding for Treatment Accountability for Safe Communities (TASC).  TASC provides behavioral and drug treatment to those involved in the justice system; these treatments help keep our communities safe.

o        Gangs in North Carolina are on the rise.  The best method to combat gang activity is through prevention. Rep. Bordsen supported $10 million for gang prevention programs across the state.

o        To reduce the number of repeat offenders in violation of domestic violence (DV) protective orders, Rep. Bordsen fought for H44, which increases the penalties for those who violate DV protective orders.
