Community Colleges & Worker Training

o        Community colleges like Alamance Community College provide the foundation for worker training as our economy transforms from manufacturing-based jobs to technology and information-based jobs.

o        In her first term, Rep. Bordsen recognized the need to maintain a well-paid community college faculty to ensure the best faculty members continued to teach.  In 2004, Rep. Bordsen’s measure to increase community college faculty salaries from 49th in the nation to the national average within five years was implemented.  The salary increase has continued every year since then with the successful inclusion of funds in the budget.

o        The State must also invest in the best, most up-to-date equipment for workers to learn new skills.  Rep. Bordsen’s proposal to devote $10 million toward community college equipment funds, H 554, was fully funded in the 2006 budget, ensuring student access to the latest technologies.

o        To ensure that our schools have enough highly-qualified teachers, in 2006 Rep. Bordsen successfully sponsored H 563, a bill that allows community colleges to train lateral entry teachers.

o        Rep. Bordsen also supported increased funding for Community College programs including Technical Education program funds and Nursing program funds.
