About Alice

From my childhood in Charlotte to my education in Chapel Hill and through my professional life, North Carolina has always been my home. The fact that two of my ancestors served in the N.C. House of Representatives makes it even more of an honor to serve Alamance County and the State of North Carolina in the General Assembly, as I have since 2002.

The oldest of five children and a product of public schools in Charlotte, I was one of a fortunate generation to grow up in a typical post WWII neighborhood, safe and free to roam with many other children my age. Our Girl Scout meetings were at the neighborhood Presbyterian Church; not only a second home to me, but a place of worship that shaped the person I am today. Alamance County has been my home for 20 years.

With a degree from UNC – Chapel Hill in history, and a Masters of Library Science, I am fortunate to have worked in a variety of fields that provide me with a thorough understanding of issues in education and small business. I have worked as a school media coordinator, university librarian, small business owner, and a real estate broker.

The unexpected death of my father is what set me on a path to public service. As often happens when we lose someone close, I found myself thinking a great deal about what work I really liked in all I had done. I realized my passion is public policy and exploring the public purposes underlying our laws. This led me to the North Carolina Central University School of Law, and while a student there I served on the Mebane City Council and held a fellowship at the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership.

I am fortunate beyond words to have the love and support from my family in all my endeavors, and they are the most important people in my life: my husband Donald Oehler, daughters Meredith Jones and Elisabeth Scharf, granddaughter Abby and grandson Cameron.
